Garmin 1000 or GTN: SD card Flightplan transfer via WLAN from iPad/iPhone to Garmin 1000 or GTN

Hi,

ich habe einen Anleitung für ein anderes Forum geschrieben, allerdings in Englisch, denke kein Problem für Euch ;-).

Nick

-----

Battery getting low very fast, (Jet)-Engine time is expensive, or it’s hot in the cabin – How can be a full flightplan in the Garmin 1000 in seconds by using WLAN?

Loading long flightplans is a pain to enter in Garmin 1000. There is for long time an option existing to load Flighplan’s by SD card, but in this case the Flightplan has to be stored first at home or office with a PC/Mac. Not very convenient. Garmin's Flight Stream is not supporting Garmin 1000.

With this instructions you are able to send a flightplan to a SD card with WLAN in the aircraft by using iPhone/iPad.

Step by step instructions to setup a Garmin 1000 SD card Flightplan transfer via WLAN. It looks in the first view complicated, but it’s not.

What you need:

1.    Toshiba FlashAir 4th Generation SD Wifi SDHC / SDHC memory card 16GB – about $45

2.    App for Iphone/iPad: FileBrowser or similar, for the step by step instructions I use this App – about $7

3.    PC or Mac

4.    Garmin 1000 or GTN

5.    Download Flashair from the Apple Appstore

Step by step part 1 – preparing the Toshiba card for usage:

1.    Add Toshiba FlashAir card in PC/Mac card Reader

2.    Find and activate on IPhone/iPad the Wlan provided by the Toshiba Flashair (default password 12345678)

3.    Open the FlashAir App

4.    Click lower left, FlashAir setup, FlashAir Card, SSID: Garmin 1000 SD, Passcode (whatever you like, this well be your WLAN with PW later), safe

5.    ON PC/MAC look for the SD card and then for the SD_WLAN folder (If you can’t see the folder on (PC: Open File Explorer from the taskbar. Select View > Options > Change folder and search options. Select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives and OK.) (Mac: In Finder, open up your Macintosh HD folder. Press Command+Shift+Dot. Your hidden files will become visible.)

6.    Go in Folder SD_WLAN

7.    Open file ‘config’ with right click (PC: Open with Notepad)(Mac: Open with TextEdit)

8.    Change ‘Appmode’ to =4

9.    Delete every line below Mastercode (Don’t delete the Mastercode/Mac address) and copy from here:

LOCK=1

APPSSID=Garmin 1000 SD

WEBDAV=2

UPLOAD=1

APPAUTOTIME=300000

DHCP_Enabled=NO

IP_Address=192.168.0.2

Subnet_Mask=255.255.255.0

Default_Gateway=192.168.0.1

Preferred_DNS_Server=192.168.0.1

My config file looks like this, your Mastercode will be different, I changed to xxxx:

[Vendor]

CIPATH=/DCIM/100__TSB/FA000001.JPG

APPMODE=4

APPNETWORKKEY=***********

VERSION=F15DBW3BW4.00.03

CID=02544d535731364754d4af377b012701

PRODUCT=FlashAir

VENDOR=TOSHIBA

MASTERCODE=4c569d2xxxx

LOCK=1

APPSSID=Garmin 1000 SD

WEBDAV=2

UPLOAD=1

APPAUTOTIME=300000

DHCP_Enabled=NO

IP_Address=192.168.0.2

Subnet_Mask=255.255.255.0

Default_Gateway=192.168.0.1

Preferred_DNS_Server=192.168.0.1

10. Save file

11. Remove card and insert again is SD slot

Part 2:

I’m using Foreflight but FF is not providing any Garmin.FPL file export by today (I asked them to change, no answer for now). So work around with Skyvector.

1.    Copy generated plain text Flightplan to clipboard (PC, Mac, or App (Foreflight: In FLP arrow on the right (share), Clipboard))

2.    Open in Browser: https://skyvector.com

3.    Click on Flight Plan (upper left), add Departure and Destination Airport, paste in white box (you might have to delete the departure and destination Airport in the white box to avoid duplication)

4.    Safe (upper right blue disc with arrow to the right)

5.    Click .fpl

6.    Click Download .fpl file (PC/Mac: safe in iCloud, Dropbox or whatever you prefer as Cloud storage) (iPhone/iPad: Accept by load – no other message will pop up – will be stored in iCloud Drive, Downloads)

Part 3:

iPhone/iPad: FileBrowser App (or other, should be similar, using iCloud for instructions)

1.    Open App FB

2.    Push ‘+’ upper on the right

3.    Manual setup

4.    WebDav

5.    Address: 192.168.0.1

6.    Empty Username/Password

7.    Screen name: Garmin 1000 SD

8.    Safe

Part 4 (in the aircraft)

1.    Add the and keep the Toshiba card in the upper slot of the Garmin 1000 MFD, Garmin 1000 can be already powered up or power up after

2.    Open App FB (with Mobile connection, on iPad maybe via iPhone Hotspot)

3.    Open iCloud/iCloud Drive

4.    Click on any .fpl file you like to load, ‘OK’

5.    Switch to iPhone/iPad settings, select WLAN ‘Garmin 1000 SD’

6.    Open App Filebrowser

7.    In FB App Click Garmin 1000 SD (tow plugs in blue should show up)

8.    Upper right ‘insert 1 file here’

9.    .fpl file is now on the Toshiba SD card (store to root director, not to any folder)

Part 5:

Garmin 1000 MFD:

1. Press the FPL Key on the Control Unit to display the Active Flight Plan Page on the MFD

2. Turn the small FMS Knob to select the Flight Plan Catalog Page

3. Press the FMS Knob to activate the cursor

4. Turn either FMS Knob to highlight an empty or existing flight plan

5. Press the IMPORT Softkey. If an empty flight plan is selected, a list of the available flight plans on the SD card will be displayed

7. Select the .FPL you want to import from the Toshiba SD WLAN Card

Part 4 and 5 is than the future setup in the aircraft. In my case by powering up the avionics I execute step 4 already.

Some notes:

For first testing you can perform 4+5 by keeping the Toshiba card in PC/Mac.

The WLAN from the SD card will stop after 5 min, to restart take the card out and back in. If you don’t like to have this auto off you can change the config file to APPAUTOTIME=0

Flightplan from the Garmin can be also exported to the SD card and then transferred to iPhone/iPad by WLAN using the Filebrowser App.

Tried to make it as easy as possible. Any comments/additions welcome.

"Unser" G1000 kann Flight Stream, es ist aber ein NXi, Gottseidank 😇

Danke für die Anleitung!

Gruss Jan

PS: Ein Part 6 fehlt noch, "ATC gives you a DCT to the IAF from your Destination, 400NM ahead of you" 😜
