After completion of the pre-take-off checklist, the HB-SDI took off from runway 27 at 15:01. Two minutes later, during the initial climb, strong engine vibrations occured at approximately 3700 ft AMSL. The instructor assumed control of the aircraft and reduced the power completely. At a low revolution per minute, the engine ran without vibrations. The instructor then assessed the systems to find the source of the problem. The carburetor heating system was activated, but no change in engine speed was observed. The possibility of carburetor icing was therefore ruled out. The instructor then gradually increased the power and above 1400 RPM5 the engine began to vibrate and lose power again. The instructor realized that the aircraft was unable to maintain a level flight at 1400 RPM, adopted the best glide angle (VBEST GLIDE6 ) speed of 70 kt and decided to make an emergency landing at Ecuvillens aerodrome which was close by. He joined the downwind leg and landed on runway 27. No radio distress signal was transmitted during the serious incident.
