Leute - als Management Pilot war ich ja auch nicht immer Herz und Seele mit den Unions. Aber das ist ein bisschen extrem.

 

"Due to mandatory minimum rest periods…"

That’s airline-speak for "our crew just got into a full-blown fistfight in the hotel lobby."

Here is what happens when union debates on the flight deck go completely off the rails.

An Air New Zealand Boeing 787 cruising from Auckland to San Francisco, a heated verbal disagreement erupted in the cockpit between the Captain and the Second Officer over union matters.

The First Officer and Second Officer formally reported the Captain's behavior. But it didn't end at 37,000 feet.

Upon reaching San Francisco, a physical altercation exploded in the hotel lobby, with the Captain reportedly throwing a barrage of punches.

Two consecutive flagship flights (NZ7 SFO AKL on Sept 6 and Sept 7) were cancelled.

A recovery flight (NZ6077) was scrambled for Sept 8 to haul stranded passengers home.

The involved crew stood down and flown back to New Zealand as passengers - on separate planes, for obvious reasons.

Air NZ forced to send polite customer emails blaming "pilot availability and mandatory rest limits" to cover for the chaos.

We're sorry to advise that your flight, NZ7 San Francisco to Auckland, Sunday 06 September, has been delayed by 14 hours & 10-minutes.  

The pilot scheduled to operate your flight is no longer able to operate your service. To get you on your way, we have arranged a replacement pilot, who is on their way to operate your flight to Auckland. Before they can do so, they are required to complete their mandatory minimum rest period.  

We understand a delay of this length is both frustrating and inconvenient, and we're sincerely sorry for the impact this unexpected disruption will have on your travel plans.  

Reconsidering your travel plans? Should you no longer wish to travel, you are eligible for a full refund of any unused fare and flight-related products associated to your booking."

Die haben sich ganz schön in die Wolle gekriegt! Und nach Ankunft, in der Hotel-Lobby, hat der Kapitän, immer noch geladen, offenbar zugeschlagen ...

Was ihn gewerkschaftlich dermassen auf 180 brachte, davon erfährt man nichts. Gehaltsfragen? Seniority list?
